Festival Di Caracalla 2026

The Festival di Caracalla 2026 invites you to experience Rome in a new and extraordinary way — where ancient history and living art converge under the open sky. For this special season, the festival leaves its traditional home due to ongoing restoration of the historic Baths of Caracalla and moves to the monumental Circus Maximus — one of the most iconic and atmospheric spaces of the Eternal City, transformed into a vast open-air stage of breathtaking scale.

Overview

At the Festival di Caracalla 2026, one of the most moving love stories ever told comes to life in John Cranko’s Romeo and Juliet — a ballet celebrated for its emotional depth, cinematic flow, and powerful storytelling. Set against the majestic backdrop of the Circus Maximus, this production transforms Shakespeare’s tragedy into an unforgettable open-air experience.

Cranko’s choreography is renowned for its ability to capture the intimacy and urgency of young love while unfolding on a grand dramatic scale. Through expressive pas de deux, vibrant crowd scenes, and finely drawn character moments, the story of Romeo and Juliet emerges with clarity, passion, and heartbreaking inevitability.

Sergei Prokofiev’s iconic score provides the emotional foundation of the ballet — sweeping, dramatic, and deeply lyrical. Performed live, the music resonates through the Roman night, amplifying every gesture, every glance, and every moment of tension between love and fate.

The monumental setting of the Circus Maximus enhances the production’s visual power, where history and performance merge into a single poetic space. Under the open sky, the ancient city becomes part of Verona’s world, giving the ballet a sense of timelessness and grandeur.

A fusion of music, movement, and legend, Romeo and Juliet at the Festival di Caracalla 2026 is a deeply moving ballet experience — where love, destiny, and tragedy unfold beneath the stars of Rome.

Romeo and Juliet is ballet created by John Cranko to Sergei Prokofiev's eponymous score for the Stuttgart Ballet in 1962 and first seen in America in 1969. The Joffrey Ballet presented the first American production of Cranko's choreography in its 1984–1985 season, including performances in New York City at the New York State Theater and in Washington, D.C. at the Kennedy Center.

History
Premiere of this production: 30 November 1937, Mahen Theatre, Brno

Romeo and Juliet is a ballet by Sergei Prokofiev based on William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. Prokofiev reused music from the ballet in three suites for orchestra and a solo piano work.

Set in the heart of ancient Rome, the Circus Maximus transforms in summer into one of the most spectacular open-air stages in the world as part of the renowned Festival di Caracalla. Once the largest stadium of the Roman Empire, where chariot races drew tens of thousands of spectators, this vast archaeological space today hosts grand opera, concerts, and ballet performances under the open sky.

Its sweeping expanse allows for large-format productions, bold сценография, and immersive staging that blend seamlessly with the timeless backdrop of Rome’s ruins. As night falls, the illuminated stage against the silhouettes of ancient hills creates a truly unforgettable atmosphere.

Despite its size, the venue retains a unique sense of magic — where history and performance meet, and where audiences experience music not only as art, but as part of a living cultural landscape.

At the Circus Maximus, the past and present converge — a legendary Roman arena reborn as a breathtaking stage for the Festival di Caracalla.
