Overview

A large-scale Chinese ethnic dance drama based on the life of Cai Wenji, the Eastern Han poet and musician. The production combines Han classical dance with Mongolian and other ethnic dance elements to tell the story of Wenji's twelve years among the Xiongnu and her eventual return to the Han realm.

The dance drama is based on the historical story of Cai Wenji, who was captured by the Xiongnu during the turmoil at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty. She lived in the northern frontier for twelve years before being ransomed and returning to the Han court.

The production explores her divided identity, family ties and longing for her homeland through dance. Han and Tang classical dance is contrasted with Mongolian-style movements representing the Xiongnu world, while the music incorporates the hujia (nomad flute) and guqin. The stage design combines historical imagery with contemporary projection and lighting technology.
