Overview

Pingtan Impression is a spectacular dance drama directed by renowned Chinese choreographer Yang Liping. Inspired by the maritime culture, folklore and legends of Pingtan, Fujian, the production combines traditional folk dance, rituals and intangible cultural heritage with contemporary choreography, immersive visuals and advanced stage technology.

Pingtan Impression is Yang Liping’s large-scale dance drama and her first major stage work centered on the maritime culture of Fujian. Drawing on the history, legends, folk traditions and natural landscapes of Pingtan, the production creates a mythological world where gods, immortals and people share a mysterious island. The story follows a prince and his companions as they encounter the island’s inhabitants and eventually join them in defending their homeland from an invading force.

The production brings together traditional songs, folk dances, Mazu rituals, puppet theatre, dragon and lion dance traditions and other elements of regional intangible cultural heritage. These are combined with contemporary choreography, elaborate costumes, large-scale ensemble scenes, projection, holographic effects and modern stage technology. Structured in four chapters exploring nature, history, culture and modern life, Pingtan Impression presents a visually rich celebration of Pingtan’s maritime heritage and the cultural connections across the Taiwan Strait.
