Overview

Cecilia Bartoli, the primadonna assoluta of the 21st century, has chosen the so-called “Parma version” with her ensemble. At the performance in Parma, the famous castrato soprano Giuseppe Millico took on the role of Orpheus. He sang in an extremely high register that is virtually unattainable for male voices today.

Gluck’s “Orfeo ed Euridice” sent the 18th-century opera world into a frenzy. Suddenly, the music served the plot, not the other way around. Gluck put an end to over-the-top coloratura and endless da capo arias that interrupted the dramatic flow. The last French queen, Marie Antoinette, an ardent admirer of his music, wrote: “It is as if a religious revolution had taken place.”

At the center of the plot is the grieving Orpheus, mourning Eurydice, who died from a fatal snakebite.
Cupid allows him to rescue her from the underworld—on the condition that he not look at her on the way back. Through his singing, Orpheus subdues the Furies. But Eurydice’s lamentations cause him to falter: he looks at her; she dies. Cupid ultimately redeems the couple.

Venue Info

Church San Francesco - Locarno
Location   Piazza San Francesco 19

The Chiesa San Francesco is a historic Catholic church in the heart of Locarno, in the Swiss canton of Ticino. Located close to the city's historic centre, the church is an important example of the religious and architectural heritage of this Italian-speaking region of Switzerland.

The church forms part of the former Franciscan monastery complex, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages. Its architecture reflects the austere traditions of the Franciscan order, with a relatively restrained exterior contrasted by an atmospheric interior featuring historic artworks and religious decoration.

The church's spacious yet intimate interior creates a particularly evocative setting for sacred music, chamber concerts, and vocal performances. Its historical character and natural acoustics make it a fitting venue for musical events in Locarno, allowing performances to take place in surroundings closely connected with centuries of European musical and spiritual heritage.

The location also places visitors within easy reach of Piazza Grande and the other cultural landmarks of Locarno. Together with the city's churches, historic buildings, lakeside promenade, and surrounding Alpine landscape, San Francesco contributes to the distinctive cultural atmosphere of the town.
