Overview

Life’s not easy on the high seas—especially when you’re there by mistake. Gilbert and Sullivan’s witty wordplay, swashbuckling satire, and captivating cadences make this lighthearted operetta a much-loved classic that never fails to entertain. Known for timeless (and tongue-twisting) tunes like “The Very Model of a Modern Major General” and “Poor Wand’ring One,” Pirates takes audiences on a lively adventure filled with comedy, disguises, romance, and dazzling singing.

History

The Pirates of Penzance is a beloved comic opera by W. S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Filled with witty dialogue, memorable melodies, and hilarious misunderstandings, the story follows Frederic, a young man raised by pirates who dreams of leaving piracy behind and finding true love. A surprising twist involving his birthday leads to a series of comic adventures involving pirates, policemen, and romance.

Synopsis

Act I

Frederic completes his apprenticeship to a band of pirates and prepares to leave them. He meets Mabel, one of Major-General Stanley's daughters, and the two quickly fall in love. Frederic promises to help defeat the pirates by revealing their hideout to the police.

Act II

The Pirate King and Ruth discover that Frederic was born on February 29. Because he has celebrated only a few birthdays, he is legally still bound by his apprenticeship. Honoring his sense of duty, Frederic returns to the pirates.

The pirates launch an attack on Major-General Stanley's estate, but the police intervene. In the final confrontation, it is revealed that the pirates are actually noblemen who have gone astray. Everyone is forgiven, the pirates regain their status, and the lovers are united.
