Programme

Overview

Australian violinist Catherina Lee and pianist-composer Miles Walter present an evening of chamber music contrasts, weaving Debussy’s final wartime sonata and Stravinsky’s kaleidoscopic Duo Concertant with modern rarities by Kurtág and Pejačević. The journey concludes in Franck’s radiant 1886 Sonata, a grand finale of virtuosity and intimate dialogue.Step into a richly textured chamber music recital as Australian violinist Catherina Lee and American pianist-composer Miles Walter unite their artistry. The first half opens with Debussy’s poignant wartime sonata—his final major statement—and unfolds through Stravinsky’s kaleidoscopic Duo Concertant, whose virtuosity recalls ancient rhetoric. From there, they navigate surprising connections in Mozart and the evocative voice of Dora Pejačević before arriving at the emotionally charged stillness of Kurtág’s Tre pezzi. After intermission, the programme returns to pre-war Francophone elegance with a luminous piece by Lili Boulanger, culminating in César Franck’s 1886 cyclical Sonata, whose sweeping lyricism and structural brilliance deliver a powerful, satisfying close. Throughout, listeners will be drawn into moments of deep intimacy, virtuosic flair and the compelling dialogue of two exiled talents.
