Programme

Overview

Traverse four centuries of chamber music with the Isla String Quartet and pianist Jamie Cochrane, from Purcell’s intricate fantasias to Bartók’s bold modernism. Revel in Schubert’s impassioned fragments, Godowsky’s virtuosic passacaglia, and Chopin’s noble Polonaise-Fantaisie in one unforgettable evening.Join the Isla String Quartet and pianist Jamie Cochrane for an evening that weaves a musical tapestry from the 17th century to the modernist heart of the 20th. The Quartet opens with Purcell’s Fantasias in Four Parts, their intricate contrapuntal lines glinting with baroque elegance, before channeling the restless urgency of Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C minor. Cochrane then brings Schubert’s Impromptu in G-flat major to life with songful clarity, followed by Godowsky’s monumental Passacaglia—a dazzling succession of variations on the theme of Schubert’s “Unfinished” Symphony. After the interval, Chopin’s Polonaise-Fantaisie unfolds with poetic grandeur and structural daring. The programme culminates in Bartók’s String Quartet No.4, its five-movement arch fusing night-music atmosphere, folk-inflected vigor and percussive intensity, redefining the possibilities of the chamber ensemble in a thrilling finale.
