Programme

Overview

Join the Karelia Quartet for an evening of musical contrasts—Peter Sculthorpe’s Australian-inspired Quartet No. 8 and Lotta Wennäkoski’s radiant Culla d’aria stand alongside Mozart’s graceful D major quartet and Grieg’s vividly expressive First Quartet. Discover a programme where place, identity and tradition come to life.Experience the Karelia Quartet as they journey through four distinct voices that each evoke a strong sense of place and heritage. Peter Sculthorpe’s String Quartet No. 8 opens the programme with its resonant harmonies, calling to mind vast Australian landscapes through haunting motifs and subtle rhythmic pulses. Lotta Wennäkoski’s Culla d’aria follows, its shimmering textures and evolving lines unfolding like living air, reflecting the quartet’s Finnish roots with crystalline clarity. Mozart’s String Quartet in D Major K.575 brings elegance and warmth, its transparent dialogue and inventive melodies offering moments of refined intimacy. The evening concludes with Edvard Grieg’s First String Quartet, whose passionate themes and dramatic sweeps capture the composer’s Nordic spirit in a work of extraordinary lyricism. Throughout the programme, each piece illuminates fresh facets of the others, weaving a tapestry of atmosphere, lyricism and discovery.
