Lehár Festival Bad Ischl 2021

In 2021 the 60th anniversary of the festival will even take place. We want to and we will celebrate with you!

Overview

"Have you forgotten about me up there?" Who doesn't know this touching line from the Wolga song? With his second production, Lehár's famous Der Zarewitsch , the Lehár Festival Bad Ischl will take you to Tsarist Russia.

The Russian tsar's son Alexej doesn't care much about the world of beautiful women - much to the chagrin of his uncle, as the tsarist empire demands an
heir to the throne as soon as possible . In order to open the rebellious Tsarevich's eyes to the joys and virtues of a lady's company, the cunning uncle brings the young ballerina Sonja into play. But what begins as a useful disguise intrigue develops into great love, which, however, is not tolerated by the Russian nobility ...

A rousing story awaits you, embedded in the most soulful and powerful melodies of Franz Lehár.
This masterpiece is staged by the operetta-proven Isabella Gregor.

History
Premiere of this production: 21 February 1927, Deutsches Künstlertheater, Berlin

Der Zarewitsch (The Tsarevich) is an operetta in three acts by Franz Lehár. The German libretto by Heinz Reichert and Bela Jenbach is based on the play of the same name by Polish author Gabriela Zapolska. One of his later operettas, Lehár composed the work as a vehicle for Richard Tauber, the acclaimed Austrian tenor. The work received its first performance at the Deutsches Künstlertheater in Berlin on 21 February 1927, with Tauber and Rita Georg in the leading roles.

Synopsis

The plot of Der Zarewitsch is loosely based on a true story: the self-imposed exile of the son of Peter the Great, Alexei, who shirked his father's command to become a monk or take interest in the military by running away to his brother-in-law's kingdom, the Holy Roman Empire, with his Finnish mistress disguised as a page. The couple spent two years in hiding until Alexei was compelled by his father to return. His father was paranoid that Alexei was conspiring against him and ultimately Alexei ended up being imprisoned and tortured. The Russian senate convicted him of conspiring against his father and he was sentenced to death. He died due to ill health before he could be executed, most likely resulting from the poor treatment he received while imprisoned.

Reichert's libretto differs on several points from the life of Alexei. First, he changed the story so that the young girl, Sonja, is first seen disguised as a male Circassian dancer. When the Tsarevich runs away with Sonja he believes that she is a boy adding what Richard Traubner of Opera News called an "underlying homosexual frisson" to the operetta. Eventually the young prince discovers that Sonja is in fact a girl disguised as a boy. The two fall in love and escape to Naples. A further major difference is that the operetta does not have such a tragic ending, though it is not exactly happy either. Eventually the Zarewitsch learns that his father has died and he knows his relationship cannot continue with Sonja as he is now the Tsar. The operetta ends with a "bittersweet royal–commoner parting".

Venue Info

Kongress and TheaterHaus Bad Ischl - Bad Ischl
Location   Kurhausstraße 8

Located in the heart of the imperial spa town of Bad Ischl, the Kongress & TheaterHaus Bad Ischl is a historic cultural venue where elegant architecture, theatrical tradition, and musical heritage come together. Surrounded by the beautiful Kurpark and the atmosphere of the Salzkammergut region, it has long been one of the most important stages for performing arts in Austria.

The history of the building dates back to the 19th century, when Bad Ischl developed into a famous imperial summer resort and a meeting place for artists, composers, and aristocracy. Originally created as a Kurhaus, the venue became a centre for concerts, social events, and cultural gatherings before evolving into today’s modern theatre and congress complex.

With its historic façade and contemporary interior facilities, the Kongress & TheaterHaus combines the charm of the past with the technical possibilities of a modern performance venue. Its theatre hall, equipped for large-scale productions, provides an ideal environment for opera, operetta, concerts, and theatrical performances.

The venue holds a special place in the cultural life of Bad Ischl as one of the main stages of the renowned Lehár Festival Bad Ischl. Dedicated to the tradition of Viennese operetta and the legacy of Franz Lehár, the festival continues the musical spirit that has surrounded the town for more than a century.

Performances at the Kongress & TheaterHaus offer audiences a unique experience: the refinement of a historic spa town, the intimacy of a traditional European theatre, and the artistic energy of contemporary productions. The combination of architecture, music, and the Alpine landscape of the Salzkammergut creates an atmosphere that is both elegant and unforgettable.
