Overview

A young student who talks to the dead; an old man who tricks his fellow men into giving him help; a colonel whose wife has been living mummy-like in a closet for years and thinks she is a parrot; and the beautiful but sickly daughter. They all come together in a once stately house for a "ghostly dinner".

What begins as a bizarre social gathering quickly turns into a savage settling of debts, in which the murky depths and hidden secrets of all those involved gradually come to light. For his chamber opera "Die Gespenstersonate", which premiered in Berlin in 1984, composer Aribert Reimann adapted "The Ghost Sonata" by Swedish dramatist August Strindberg to create this subtle and intelligent dissection of society, which builds on the great success of his literary operas "Lear" and "Melusine".

History
Premiere of this production: Deutsche Oper Berlin

Die Gespenstersonate is a 1984 German-language opera by Aribert Reimann to a libretto by the composer and Uwe Schendel after August Strindberg's play The Ghost Sonata. Strindgerg's play also inspired another opera, Die Gespenstersonate by Julius Weismann (1930).

Synopsis

The young student Arkenholz has an extraordinary ability: he can see dead people who appear until their death is atoned for. Following the events of a traumatic night for him, he meets the spirit of a deceased milk girl in front of a former stately home. Director Hummel, who once drove Arkenholz's father into financial ruin, observes the student's apparent soliloquy and pretends to be an old man in need of help. He swindles Arkenholz that he is not to blame for his father's misfortune and offers him a job and the prospect of his inheritance. He also presents him with the enigmatic people who live in this house: the colonel and his wife, "the mummy", who has been living in a closet for twenty years and thinks she is a parrot; her daughter, "the Miss", who lives sick in a room full of hyacinths; the spirit of the dead consul and his daughter, the dark lady and finally Hummel's former fiancee, the now aged Miss Holsteinkrona. Johannsson, Hummel's servant, tries to warn Arkenholz of his master's dark machinations - to no avail. For the traditional "ghost soup", for which everyone in the house has been coming regularly for twenty years, Hummel appears, who, as a self-appointed judge, is planning a large settlement, uninvited with ark wood. Relentlessly, he uncovers all the secrets of those involved until the judge suddenly sits on the dock himself ...

The Ghost Sonata relates the adventures of a young student, who idealizes the lives of the inhabitants of a stylish apartment building in Stockholm. He makes the acquaintance of the mysterious Jacob Hummel, who helps him to find his way into the apartment, only to find that it is a nest of betrayal and sickness. The world, the student learns, is hell and human beings must suffer to achieve salvation. The play centers on a family of strangers who meet for the sake of meeting. They exchange no dialogue, nor gestures, they simply sit and bask in their own misfortune.

To Strindberg, family was something that he could never understand or even be a functioning part of: "Family... the home of all social evil, a charitable institution for comfortable women, an anchorage for house-fathers, and a hell for children" (Strindberg's Inferno). As a child, Strindberg went through the very hell he alludes to about the family. As an adult he realized that he would rather have died than lived a childhood hell and an adult hell, thus spawning a mania fixating on death.

Venue Info

Semperoper Dresden - Dresden
Location   Theaterplatz 2

Not only one of the most beautiful opera houses in the world, the Semperoper is renowned both in Germany and abroad for the brilliant star-studded performances by Saxon State Opera as well as numerous international guest artists.

This is the home of the Staatskapelle Dresden, an orchestra which looks back on 460 years of uninterrupted music-making. The State Opera Chorus was founded by Carl Maria von Weber in 1817. Operatic history has been written here, with the Semperoper playing host to numerous important premieres, such as Richard Wagner’s "Rienzi", "Der fliegende Holländer" and "Tannhäuser". There is also an indissoluble link to Richard Strauss, nine of whose 15 operas were premiered in Dresden, including "Salome", "Der Rosenkavalier" and "Elektra". The small venue Semper Zwei provides space for diverse forms of music theatre as well as theatrical experiments, and is also the venue for performances of Semperoper Junge Szene.

The magnificent Semperoper dominates the Theaterplatz be-side the river Elbe, forming the centrepiece of the historic old city. The original building opened its doors in 1841, constructed to a design by Gottfried Semper which combined a late Classical style with Renaissance elements. Following a devastating fire in 1869, the citizens of Dresden immediately set about rebuilding their beloved opera house. This was completed in 1878, also to a design by Semper. In 1945, during the final months of World War II, the Semperoper was once again razed to the ground.

After a second reconstruction was successfully completed in 1985, the reopening of one of Europe’s most beautiful opera houses was celebrated with a performance of Carl Maria von Weber’s "Freischütz".
The dazzling interiors were painstakingly reconstructed by local craftsmen and artists according to original plans, with state-of-the art stage machinery and technical fittings in the auditorium. A modern annex was added to house the administrative offices and rehearsal rooms. Internationally renowned for its brilliant acoustics and incomparable performances, audiences from around the world continue to flock here to enjoy unforgettable experiences at the Semperoper Dresden.
