Overview

"CACTI is about the way we look at art and our need to analyse and understand art. In my mind there is no right way to go about it, it’s up to each and every one to interpret and experience art any way they like" says Alexander Ekman. During the pandemic audiences were restricted to only 50 people, but now CACTI is back and can be enjoyed by more lovers of dance!

In Vertical Road (Reimagined) 2023, acclaimed choreographer Akram Khan invites audiences into a powerful, communal journey of transformation. Set to an evocative original score and driven by rhythmic, elemental movement, the ballet explores humanity’s search for meaning—through struggle, ritual, and collective strength.

The dancers move as one and apart, grounded in the earth yet constantly reaching upward, creating an atmosphere that feels both ancient and urgently present. As the work unfolds, audience and performers share the same emotional terrain, witnessing how connection, resilience, and hope emerge through motion. Vertical Road (Reimagined) 2023 is not just something to watch, but something to feel—an immersive encounter that unfolds live, in a shared moment.

History
Premiere of this production: 25 February 2010, Lucent Dans theatre, Den Haag

In Cacti, Alexander Ekman turns his keen eye upon the scene that birthed him: contemporary dance itself. A gleeful and knowing parody of the art form’s greater excesses, Cacti is an affectionate, pointed, and often hilarious deconstruction of the affectations of dance.

Venue Info

Théâtre des Champs-Elysées - Paris
Location   15 Avenue Montaigne

The Théâtre des Champs-Élysées is an entertainment venue situated near Avenue des Champs-Élysées, from which it takes its name. Its eponymous main hall may seat up to 1,905 people.

Commissioned by impresario Gabriel Astruc, the theatre was built from 1911 to 1913 upon the designs of brothers Auguste Perret and Gustave Perret following a scheme by Henry van de Velde, and became the first example of Art Deco architecture in the city. Less than two months after its inauguration, the Théâtre hosted the world premiere of the Ballets Russes' Rite of Spring, which provoked one of the most famous classical music riots.

At present, the theatre shows about three staged opera productions a year, mostly baroque or chamber works more suited to the modest size of its stage and orchestra pit. It also houses an important concert season. It is the home venue of the Orchestre National de France and the Orchestre Lamoureux and serves as a French base for the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra as well.

The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, the Orchestre des Champs-Élysées and Ensemble orchestral de Paris play most of their concerts here too, along with other dance, chamber music, recital, and pop events.
