About

Emerging virtuosos all, the musicians of the Curtis Symphony Orchestra meld into an expression of something much greater. Add internationally renowned conductors and sparkling repertoire, and the result is an immersive experience with unique resonance. The Curtis Symphony Orchestra has received international praise for its exuberant, joyous performances.

Honing their craft under celebrated conductors, 100 young musicians — all students at the Curtis Institute of Music — perform with a fresh exuberance that makes each work new. Recent visiting conductors include Osmo Vänskä, Vladimir Jurowski, Marin Alsop, Simon Rattle, Robert Spano, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin. This professional training has enabled Curtis alumni to assume prominent positions in orchestras around the world, including the Berlin Philharmonic, the Vienna Philharmonic, and the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra.

Curtis On Tour is the global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music and brings its extraordinary artistry to national and international audiences, with students performing alongside celebrated Curtis alumni and faculty. An embodiment of the school’s “learn by doing” philosophy, it offers students real-world, professional touring experience alongside celebrated alumni and faculty. In addition to performances, students frequently offer master classes, in-school demonstrations, and other community engagement activities.

In May and June 2017, the Curtis Symphony Orchestra embarks on an ambitious tour of Europe, visiting nine cities in eighteen days, together with charismatic music director of the Minnesota Orchestra, Osmo Vänskä, and soloists drawn from the ranks of Curtis graduates: Peter Serkin, Benjamin Schmid and Curtis President Roberto Díaz.
