Euskalduna Bilbao

The Euskalduna Conference Centre and Concert Hall (Euskalduna Bilbao) is one of the most important cultural and performing arts venues in Bilbao, in Spain's Basque Country. Located on the banks of the Nervión River, the striking building is an important symbol of the city's transformation from an industrial port into a dynamic centre of contemporary culture.

Designed by architects Federico Soriano and Dolores Palacios, Euskalduna opened in 1999 on the site of a former shipyard. Its weathered steel exterior was deliberately conceived to evoke a ship emerging from the industrial landscape, paying tribute to Bilbao's maritime and shipbuilding heritage. The building's distinctive form has since become one of the city's modern architectural landmarks.

The complex houses a large auditorium with excellent acoustics and sophisticated stage facilities, making it suitable for opera, ballet, symphonic concerts, theatre, musicals, and major cultural productions. It is closely associated with Bilbao Opera Orchestra and regularly welcomes leading Spanish and international artists and ensembles.

Euskalduna is particularly important to the cultural life of the Basque Country. The venue hosts productions of the ABAO Bilbao Opera, bringing major works from the international operatic repertoire to Bilbao. Its programme also encompasses classical music, contemporary performance, dance, theatre, and large-scale touring productions.

The centre's location makes it especially attractive for visitors. It stands within Bilbao's regenerated riverfront district, close to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the city's historic centre. The surrounding waterfront and modern urban landscape provide a striking contrast to Bilbao's older architectural heritage.
