Lehár Festival Bad Ischl 2026

The Lehár Festival Bad Ischl 2026 invites audiences to step into the golden world of operetta, where elegance, humour, romance, and unforgettable melodies come together in the historic spa town of Bad Ischl. From 11 July to 30 August 2026, this celebrated festival transforms the former summer residence of Emperor Franz Joseph into a vibrant stage for one of Europe’s most beloved traditions of musical theatre.

Overview

With Boccaccio, Franz von Suppè created an operetta that shines in every aspect. A never-ending wealth of musical highlights, sophistication, and exuberance is complemented by the witty and humorous libretto by Friedrich Zell and Richard Genée.

Medieval Florence is in turmoil, and the reason is the notorious poet Boccaccio. With his novellas about the uninhibited love lives of Florentine women, he drives the respectable gentlemen of the city to protest, while the women gladly succumb to the poet’s charm. Soon, however, the daring title character finds himself caught up in a romantic adventure that promises to become much more than just material for his next novella. While the angry crowd publicly burns his works, Boccaccio has lost his heart to the most beautiful of all Florentine women.

Franz von Suppè’s operetta Boccaccio is a true “triumph piece” that leaves nothing to be desired.

History
Premiere of this production: 01 February 1879, Carltheater, Vienna

Boccaccio, oder Der Prinz von Palermo (Boccaccio, or the Prince of Palermo) is an operetta in three acts by Franz von Suppé to a German libretto by Camillo Walzel and Richard Genée, based on the play by Jean-François Bayard, Adolphe de Leuven, Léon Lévy Brunswick and Arthur de Beauplan, based in turn on The Decameron by Giovanni Boccaccio. Despite the opera's clear links to the Viennese opera tradition, Suppé's opera takes most of its style from Italian opera.

Synopsis

Time: 1331.
Place: Florence

In early-Renaissance Florence, the erotic novellas of the poet Boccaccio cause a stir and the locals are divided into the female fans of his scandalous tales and their jealous husbands. A plot is hatched by the husbands to chase Boccaccio from the city and have him locked up. But Boccaccio has other plans, including one to win the hand of the Duke's daughter Fiammetta, which he finally succeeds in doing after finding favour with the Duke.

Venue Info

Kongress and TheaterHaus Bad Ischl - Bad Ischl
Location   Kurhausstraße 8

Located in the heart of the imperial spa town of Bad Ischl, the Kongress & TheaterHaus Bad Ischl is a historic cultural venue where elegant architecture, theatrical tradition, and musical heritage come together. Surrounded by the beautiful Kurpark and the atmosphere of the Salzkammergut region, it has long been one of the most important stages for performing arts in Austria.

The history of the building dates back to the 19th century, when Bad Ischl developed into a famous imperial summer resort and a meeting place for artists, composers, and aristocracy. Originally created as a Kurhaus, the venue became a centre for concerts, social events, and cultural gatherings before evolving into today’s modern theatre and congress complex.

With its historic façade and contemporary interior facilities, the Kongress & TheaterHaus combines the charm of the past with the technical possibilities of a modern performance venue. Its theatre hall, equipped for large-scale productions, provides an ideal environment for opera, operetta, concerts, and theatrical performances.

The venue holds a special place in the cultural life of Bad Ischl as one of the main stages of the renowned Lehár Festival Bad Ischl. Dedicated to the tradition of Viennese operetta and the legacy of Franz Lehár, the festival continues the musical spirit that has surrounded the town for more than a century.

Performances at the Kongress & TheaterHaus offer audiences a unique experience: the refinement of a historic spa town, the intimacy of a traditional European theatre, and the artistic energy of contemporary productions. The combination of architecture, music, and the Alpine landscape of the Salzkammergut creates an atmosphere that is both elegant and unforgettable.
