Rheingau Musik Festival 2026

The Rheingau Musik Festival 2026 invites music lovers to experience one of Europe’s most inspiring summer festivals, where outstanding performances unfold among vineyards, historic castles, monasteries, and elegant concert halls along the Rhine. From 20 June to 5 September 2026, the Rheingau region becomes a vibrant musical landscape, bringing together internationally acclaimed artists, exceptional ensembles, and unforgettable concert experiences.

Programme
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Hebrides Overture "Fingal's Cave", Op.26
Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy: Violin Concerto in E minor, Op.64
Ludwig van Beethoven : Symphony no. 5 in C minor, Op.67
Overview

For around 25 years, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields has been a regular guest in the Rheingau region and has now become only the second orchestra in the festival's history to achieve Orchestra in Residence status. The ensemble's relationship with its music director, Joshua Bell, is also particularly noteworthy: Since 2011, the violinist and Grammy winner has led the Academy and sees himself as first among equals.

The star violinist is happy to conduct the venerable orchestra even when he himself is performing the solo part. This is no small feat when Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's Violin Concerto is on the program! The demanding work usually requires a conductor alongside the soloist. Joshua Bell and the Academy, however, love the direct contact: "This orchestra knows me so well that they can interpret all my gestures. They know what I mean when I raise my eyebrows or bend my knees," the violinist describes the collaborative music-making and the intense dialogue that these musicians conjure up on stage in their performances.
