Rheingau Musik Festival 2026

The Rheingau Musik Festival 2026 invites music lovers to experience one of Europe’s most inspiring summer festivals, where outstanding performances unfold among vineyards, historic castles, monasteries, and elegant concert halls along the Rhine. From 20 June to 5 September 2026, the Rheingau region becomes a vibrant musical landscape, bringing together internationally acclaimed artists, exceptional ensembles, and unforgettable concert experiences.

Programme
Johannes Brahms: Violin Concerto in D major, Op.77
Johannes Brahms: Symphony no. 2 in D major, Op.73
Overview

To conclude the two-year cycle of all four symphonies by Johannes Brahms, this evening will feature what is perhaps his most cheerful contribution to the genre: the Second, characterized by pastoral wind sounds and gentle melodies, composed on the idyllic shores of Lake Wörthersee.

This summer retreat proved a wonderful setting for composition, and it was there that the Hamburg composer also wrote his only violin concerto, which he dedicated to the great violin virtuoso and close friend Joseph Joachim. A work once considered "unplayable," it is now one of the great touchstones of Romantic violin literature. But this poses no problem for our featured artist this year, María Dueñas, whose impressively virtuosic violin playing has led to comparisons with the young Anne-Sophie Mutter. With the fourth and final concert of the Brahms cycle, María Dueñas and the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra under their chief conductor Jakub Hrůša celebrate its festive finale this evening.
